Methodology: | Mechanical Clot Detection / Automated Blood Cell Counter / Whole Blood PLT Aggregometer
Edit Date: | 6/11/2010 | ||||||||
Components: | Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time (APTT) / Bleeding Time / Complete Blood Count (CBC) / Fibrinogen / Platelet Function Analysis (PFA), In-Vitro Bleeding Time / Prothrombin Time (PT) / each test includes a pathologist interpretation.
Performed: | Daily | ||||||||
Released: | 24 hours | ||||||||
CPT Code: | 85025 / 85384 / 85576 / 85610 / 85730
Specimen Collection Details
Collection: | Total of three tubes: Two 4.5 mL light blue top tubes (sodium citrate) AND one 4 mL lavender top tube (EDTA). Patient should not take aspirin or related compounds for one week prior to test. Collect blood by careful venipuncture to avoid tissue fluid contamination or hemolysis. Do not use needles smaller than 23 gauge. Fill tubes to maximum draw (at least 90% full). Mix by gentle inversion. The specimens must arrive at laboratory within 3 hours of collection, as the PFA test must be performed within 4 hours of collection.
Handling: | Due to short stability, specimen must be sent STAT to arrive in laboratory within 3 hours to allow testing within 4 hours of collection. Do not centrifuge any tube. Refrigerate the lavender top tube and one blue top tube. Keep capped in original tubes. Remaining blue top tube is for PFA test. Keep ambient, and note on tube, “PFA – keep ambient.” Do not transport PFA specimen through a pneumatic tube system. Call for STAT pick-up. To assist with pathologist interpretation, include information about patient’s bleeding history . Please print out and submit the Bleeding Disorder form with the specimen for optimal pathologist interpretation of the lab results. |
||||||||
Standard Volume: | Two 4.5 mL light blue top tubes (sodium citrate) AND one 4 mL lavender top tube (EDTA).
Minimum Volume: | Two 2.7 mL light blue top tubes (sodium citrate) AND one 1mL lavender top tube (EDTA) in microcollection tube.
Transport: | Original tubes refrigerated, and one blue top tube labeled, “PFA – keep ambient,” ambient. Must be sent STAT to reach laboratory within 3 hours.
Rejection Criteria: | Clotted EDTA tube; visible fibrin; moderate to marked hemolysis in citrated plasma; centrifugation or refrigeration of the PFA specimen; specimen received in laboratory beyond stated stability. |
