Specimen Collection Details
Collection:
One 6 mL royal blue top tube trace element serum (no additives). Also acceptable: One 6 mL royal blue top tube (EDTA) K2.
Handling:
Allow to clot, centrifuge and separate serum or plasma from cells and immediately pour into either an ARUP Trace Element-Free transport tube, available from Client Services, or a royal blue trace element-no additive tube. Do not allow serum or plasma to remain on cells. Refrigerate.
Stability:
If specimen is drawn and stored in the appropriate container, trace element values do not change with time.
Standard Volume:
2 mL serum or plasma.
Minimum Volume:
0.5 mL serum or plasma. Minimum volume does not allow repeat testing.
Transport:
Refrigerated.
Comments:
Circulating zinc concentrations are dependent on albumin status and are depressed with malnutrition. Zinc may also be lowered with infection, inflammation, stress, oral contraceptives, and pregnancy. Zinc may be elevated with zinc supplementation or fasting. Elevated zinc concentrations may interfere with copper absorption.
Rejection Criteria:
Hemolysis; specimen not clotted or separated from cells; use of tube other than those specified.
