Specimen Collection Details
Collection: Two 4 mL lavender top tubes (EDTA).
Handling: Refrigerate. If available, include reports of CBCs and iron studies with specimen. If possible, submit to the laboratory within 24 hours of collection for optimal Thalassemia evaluation (Hgb H screen). If multiple tests are ordered, send separate specimen for this test.
Stability: 7 days refrigerated.
Standard Volume: 4 mL whole blood each tube.
Minimum Volume: 1 mL whole blood each tube.
Transport: Refrigerated.
Comments: Hemoglobinopathy Evaluation includes a CBC (NO DIFF) with RBC morphology and testing for Hbg A2, Hgb F and other variants using high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC). If indicated, additional testing may be required to identify abnormal hemoglobin patterns. These additional tests will be billed and may include any of the following: Hemoglobin H Screen (CPT Code 83020), Sickle Cell Exam (CPT Code 85660), HGB Electrophoresis, Acid (CPT Code 83020), HGB Electrophoresis, Alkaline (CPT Code 83020).
Rejection Criteria: Frozen, clotted, or grossly hemolyzed specimen.
