Specimen Collection Details
Collection: One 4 mL lavender top tube (EDTA).
Handling: Centrifuge and separate plasma from cells and pour into a plastic vial. Refrigerate or freeze if testing cannot be performed within 8 hours on separated plasma.
Stability: Plasma stable 8 hours ambient, 24 hours refrigerated, or 4 months frozen.
Standard Volume: 1 mL plasma.
Minimum Volume: 0.5 mL plasma.
Transport: Ambient, refrigerated, or frozen on dry ice.
Comments: NOTE: For sites performing BNP on a Triage Meter where whole blood as well as plasma is acceptable, the following criteria apply to whole blood specimens on the Triage Meter only: Whole blood is stable 7 hours ambient or refrigerated. If whole blood testing cannot be performed within 7 hours, separate plasma from cells. Plasma stable 24 hours ambient or refrigerated. Freeze if specimen cannot be assayed within 24 hours. Triage Meters are used at SHED, SHUD, Cottage Grove, and West Linn in Portland.
Rejection Criteria: Hemolysis; frozen whole blood; tube other than specified; whole blood left ambient or refrigerated more than 24 hours; plasma left ambient more than 8 hours or left refrigerated more than 24 hours.
