Specimen Collection Details
Collection: One 7.5 mL serum separator tube (SST). Also acceptable: One 4 mL green top tube (heparin) or one 4.5 mL plasma separator tube (PST). Draw tubes should be filled completely.
Handling: Allow to clot, centrifuge SST or PST within 2 hours of collection and transport in original tube. Immediately centrifuge green top tube and separate plasma from cells into a plastic vial for transport.
Stability: 48 hours refrigerated.
Standard Volume: 2 mL serum or plasma.
Minimum Volume: 0.5 mL serum or plasma.
Transport: Refrigerated.
Comments: Loss of CO2 from an uncapped tube is approximately 6 mmol/L after 1 hour.
