Specimen Collection Details
Collection: Collect specimen from endocervix, male urethra, pharynx, rectum, skin or conjunctiva using a Routine Culture transport swab. Collect synovial fluid in a sterile plastic container, or sterile syringe with air expelled. Accepted but not recommended: Sterile 4 mL green top tube (heparin). Specimen may be plated directly to Thayer Martin agar and transported in a container with a CO2 generator. If transport is delayed, incubate Thayer Martin agar plate in CO2 at 35° C.
Handling: If syringe is submitted, the needle must be removed and the syringe capped.
Stability: Specimen other than on Thayer Martin agar plate stable 6 hours ambient. Specimen on Thayer Martin agar plate in CO2 stable 24 hours ambient. Unstable refrigerated or frozen.
Transport: Ambient.
Comments: Presumptive isolates of Neisseria gonorrhoeae will be ruled out or confirmed. An additional charge will be added for this testing. See also: Neisseria gonorrhoeae (GC) Culture (60750) (no direct smear).
Rejection Criteria: Delayed transport; unsterile container; lavender top tube (EDTA); refrigerated or frozen specimen; cotton swab; swab not in transport media.
