Collection: | One 7.5 mL plastic serum separator tube (SST). Also acceptable: One 4 mL green top tube (sodium heparin). NOTE: If an upright specimen is collected, patient should be upright (seated or standing) for at least 2 hours. | ||||||||
Handling: | Allow to clot, centrifuge and separate serum or heparinized plasma from cells and pour into a plastic vial. Freeze. If multiple tests are ordered, submit separate specimen for those tests. | ||||||||
Stability: | After separation, specimen stable 4 hours ambient, 7 days refrigerated, or 1 month frozen. | ||||||||

Interpretive Data: Normal serum levels of aldosterone are dependent on the sodium intake and whether the patient is upright or supine. High sodium intake will tend to suppress serum aldesterone, whereas low sodium intake will elevate serum aldosterone. The reference intervals for serum aldosterone are based on normal sodium intake. |
