Performed: Sunday-Friday
Released: 24-72 hours after setup at PeaceHealth Laboratories’ reference lab.
CPT Code: 80299-90 x2
Specimen Collection Details
Collection: One 5 mL red top tube. Also acceptable: One 4 mL green top tube (sodium heparin), lone 4 mL lavendar top tube (EDTA), or one 4 mL grey top tube (sodium fluoride/potassium oxalate). Do not use serum separator tube (SST) or plasma separator tube (PST).
Handling: Protect from light. Allow to clot, centrifuge and separate serum or plasma from cells. Refrigerate.
Stability: Specimen stable 4 weeks ambient, 6 weeks refrigerated, or 6 weeks frozen.
Standard Volume: 2 mL serum or plasma.
Minimum Volume: 0.8 mL serum or plasma.
Transport: Refrigerated.
Rejection Criteria: Use of serum separator tube (SST), (PST), or gels.

Amoidarone 1.0-3.0 ug/mL
Desethylamoidarone Not established
Potential toxic level >3.0 ug/mL

Interpretative Data: The therapeutic range of amiodarone is not presently well established. Toxic effects may begin above 3.0 ug/mL. The concentration of desethylamiodarone, a major metabolite, is also reported, but no therapeutic range is available. At steady-state, the metabolite concentration is similar to the amiodarone concentration. This metabolite may be pharmacologically active, but the extent of activity is not known with certainty.
