Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL), bronchial brushing, induced sputum, or lung tissue in a sterile container.
Stability:
2 hours ambient or 72 hours refrigerated. Specimen unstable frozen.
Standard Volume:
20-30 mL BAL, bronchial brush in 1 mL saline, 2 mL sputum.
Minimum Volume:
10 mL BAL, bronchial brush in 1 mL saline, 2 mL sputum.
Transport:
Ambient or refrigerated.
Comments:
To prevent drying, submit tissue specimen in small amount of sterile saline.
Rejection Criteria:
Specimen submitted in formalin or viral transport media; dry specimen; frozen specimen; specimen left ambient more than 4 hours or refrigerated more than 7 days; specimen volume less than 2 mL non-induced sputum. Leaking containers will be rejected if source is respiratory or if there is an indication of mycobacterial infection such as clinical history or orders for Acid Fast Bacillus (AFB) culture and/or smear.
