80801:WEST NILE VIRUS RNA, RT-PCR
Alias Names: RT-PCR
Methodology: Reverse Transcription-Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR)
Edit Date: 4/5/2005
Performed: Monday-Friday
Released: 48 hours after setup at PeaceHealth Laboratories’ reference lab
CPT Code: 87798-90
Specimen Collection Details
Collection: One 7.5 mL serum separator tube (SST) or cerebral spinal fluid (CSF). Indicate specimen source
Handling: Allow to clot, centrifuge and separate serum from cells and pour into a plastic vial immediately. CSF should be in a sterile container. Freeze immediately. Avoid repeated freeze/thaw cycles.
Stability: 1 hour ambient , 24 hours refrigerated, or 3 months frozen.
Standard Volume: 1 mL serum or CSF.
Minimum Volume: 0.3 mL serum or CSF.
Transport: Frozen on dry ice. Critical frozen.
Comments: A negative result does not rule out the presence of PCR inhibitors in the patient specimen of West Nile virus nucleic acid in concentrations below the level of detection of the assay.
Rejection Criteria: Heparinized or hemolyzed specimen; non-sterile or leaking containers.

Negative: Positive:
West Nile virus nucleic acid not detected by RT-PCR. West Nile virus nucleic acid detected by RT-PCR.
