Frozen on dry ice.
Comments:
Specimens should be collected early in the acute phase of infection. The chance of viral recovery is best during the first 3 days after onset and is greatly reduced beyond 5 days with many viruses. Assay detects and identifies HSV using “transgenic cell technology.” HSV is responsible for several clinically significant human viral diseases, with severity ranging from mild to fatal. HSV Type 1 infections are usually found above the waist. HSV Type 2 infections are more commonly seen in association with the genitalia and surrounding areas and are usually sexually transmitted. It is important to note, however, that both HSV Type 1 and 2 have been involved in all disease manifestations and locations of the body. Positives will be typed.
