Specimen Collection Details
Collection:
Two sets of blood cultures simultaneously (maximum of 15 minutes apart): One peripheral and the other from the catheter. For each set draw 5-10 mL blood into a BacT/Alert FA (aerobic)bottle and a BacT/Alert FN (anaerobic) bottle using aseptic technique as defined for blood culture collection. Use BacT/Alert PF (yellow top) bottle for difficult collections and pediatric specimens. Bottle(s) are to be at ambient temperature. Inspect broth and sensor and do not use if broth is cloudy or sensor is yellow. Do not refrigerate.
Stability:
24 hours ambient. Unstable frozen.
Standard Volume:
BacT/Alert FA and FN bottles: 10 mL blood each. BacT/Alert PF bottle: 4 mL blood.
Minimum Volume:
BacT/Alert FA and FN bottles: 5 mL blood each. BacT /Alert PF bottles: 1 mL blood.
Transport:
Ambient.
Comments:
Blood cultures are held for 2 weeks by special request when yeast is suspected. Positive culture reports will include “Time to Positive.” If the same organism is isolated from both the peripheral and catheter draws and the catheter draw becomes positive more than two hours before the peripheral draw, catheter associated bacteremia is indicated. Isolated organisms will be identified. Susceptibility testing will be done if appropriate. Additional charges will be added for these tests.
