80835:JC VIRUS DNA, PCR
Methodology: Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)
Edit Date: 9/17/2007
Performed: Monday, Wednesday, Friday
Released: 3-5 days after setup at PeaceHealth Laboratories’ reference lab.
CPT Code: 87798-90
Specimen Collection Details
Collection: Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) in a plastic leak-proof vial. Also acceptable: Urine, serum, or EDTA plasma.
Handling: Freeze CSF or urine. Centrifuge and separate serum or plasma from cells and pour into a plastic vial. Freeze. INDICATE SOURCE.
Stability: 8 hours ambient, 72 hours refrigerated, or 30 days frozen.
Standard Volume: 1 mL CSF, serum or plasma, or urine.
Minimum Volume: 250 µL CSF, serum or plasma, or urine.
Transport: Frozen on dry ice.
Comments: JC Virus is the cause of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML), a severe demyelinating disease of the central nervous system. PML is a particular concern for individuals infected with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus. The detection of JC Virus DNA is based upon the real-time PCR amplification and detection of specific JC Virus genomic sequences from total DNA extracted from the specimen.
Rejection Criteria: Heparinized specimen.

Not detected.
