Specimen Collection Details
Collection: One 7.5 mL serum separator tube (SST).
Handling: Allow to clot, centrifuge and separate serum from cells and pour into a screw-capped plastic vial. Refrigerate. Clearly label specimen ‘acute’ or ‘convalescent’.
Standard Volume: 1 mL serum.
Minimum Volume: 0.5 mL serum (pediatric: 250 µL).
Transport: Refrigerated.
Comments: Recommend acute and convalescent specimens. Convalescent specimens should be obtained 2-3 weeks after onset.
Rejection Criteria: Grossly lipemic or hemolyzed; specimen other than serum.
