Specimen Collection Details
Collection:
Specimen from the vaginal cavity using a sterile rayon swab. Do not use cotton swab or swab with wooden shaft.
Handling:
Break off swab into a sterile, capped tube containing at least 1 mL but no more than 2 mL of sterile, unpreserved saline.
Stability:
2 hours ambient or 24 hours refrigerated. Unstable frozen.
Transport:
Ambient or refrigerated.
Comments:
Microscopic examination is done for yeast, bacteria, RBCs, WBCs, epithelial cells, and clue cells. An antigen detection test is used to test for Trichomonas.
Rejection Criteria:
Delayed transport; frozen specimen; dry swab, cotton swab, or swab with wooden shaft; swab in more than 2 mL saline.
