Specimen Collection Details
Collection: One 7.5 mL serum separator tube (SST). Also acceptable: One 5 mL red top tube or one 4 mL lavender top tube.
Handling: Allow to clot, centrifuge and separate serum or plasma from cells immediately and pour into a plastic vial. Refrigerate. Freeze if specimen cannot be assayed within 5 days. Avoid multiple freeze/thaw cycles.
Stability: Specimen stable 5 days refrigerated or indefinitely frozen.
Standard Volume: 1 mL serum or plasma.
Minimum Volume: 0.3 mL serum or plasma.
Transport: Refrigerated, or if frozen, on dry ice.
Comments: CDC recommendation includes that all reactive rapid HIV-1 antibody test results must be confirmed with HIV Western Blot. Testing for rapid HIV-1 Antibody can also be performed on whole blood with confirmation by Western Blot, however, it must be performed on serum or plasma.
Rejection Criteria: Gross hemolysis or lipemia; multiple freeze/thaw cycles.
