Comments:
Parainfluenza viruses are categorized into Types 1, 2, 3, and 4, of which Types 1, 2, and 3 are clinically the most common. Type 4 only rarely causes a mild respiratory illness. The spectrum of disease varies from mild upper respiratory illness to severe pneumonia. Types 1 and 3 are common in early childhood, causing sharp localized outbreaks in nurseries, schools, orphanages, and pediatric wards. Types 1 and 2 are the principle causes of laryngotracheobronchitis (croup). Type 3 is second only to respiratory syncytial virus in importance as a cause of bronchiolitis and pneumonia in infants.
Rejection Criteria:
Plasma; hemolyzed, lipemic, turbid, bacterially contaminated, or heat-inactivated specimen.
