Edit Date: 4/19/2010
Performed: Daily
Released: Same day as tested
CPT Code: 83695
Specimen Collection Details
Collection: One 7.5 mL serum separator tube (SST). Also acceptable: One 4 mL green top tube (heparin).
Handling: Allow to clot at ambient termperature before centrifuging. Centrifuge and immediately separate serum from cells into a plastic vial. Refrigerate. Freeze within 24 hours if specimen will not be assayed within 7 days. Allow no more than one freeze/thaw cycle.
Stability: 8 hours ambient, 7 days refrigerated, or 1 month frozen if frozen within 24 hours of collection.
Standard Volume: 1 mL serum or plasma.
Minimum Volume: 0.5 mL serum or plasma.
Transport: Refirgerated, or frozen on dry ice.
Comments: Lipoprotein (a) is a heterogeneous family of lipoprotein particles consisting of an apoliprotein (a) molecule attached to an apolipoprotein B-100 and a lipid-rich LDL-like core. Lp (a) levels are genetcially determined and remain relatively stable over an individual’s lifetime. An elevated blood concentration of Lp (a) is associated with increased risk for myocardial infarction, stroke, coronary artery disease, vein graft restenosis, and retinal arterial occlusion. Lp (a) levels above 30 mg/dL represent a twofold relative risk for the development of atherosclerotic disease.
Rejection Criteria: Highly lipemic specimen; specimen thawed and frozen more than once.

Reference Range:
<30 mg/dL
