Specimen Collection Details
Collection: NOTE: All outpatient blood gases, capillary and arterial, must be drawn in the Respiratory Therapy Department outpatient room at Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend, located on the second floor of the Hospital. Outpatient draws are done between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. No appointment is necessary.
Draw whole blood in 5 mL heparinized plastic syringe. Collect whole blood by radial artery stick.
Handling: Remove any air bubbles immediately. Transport specimen to laboratory ambient within 30 minutes. Do not cool specimen.
Stability: 30 minutes ambient.
Standard Volume: 2 mL arterial whole blood.
Minimum Volume: 1 mL arterial whole blood.
Transport: Ambient.
Rejection Criteria: Transport delayed more than 30 minutes prior to testing.
