Specimen Collection Details
Collection: One pre-chilled 4 mL lavender top tube (EDTA).
Handling: Centrifuge in a chilled centrifuge and separate plasma from cells immediately. Freeze immediately in a plastic vial. Allow no more than one freeze/thaw cycle. If other testing is ordered, send a separate specimen for this test.
Stability: 30 days frozen at -20° C.
Standard Volume: 0.5 mL plasma.
Minimum Volume: 100 µL plasma.
Transport: Frozen on dry ice.
Comments: Plasma ACTH determinations are useful in the differential diagnosis of Cushing’s disease, Addison’s disease, autonomous ACTH-producing pituitary tumors, hypopituitarism with ACTH deficiency and ectopic ACTH syndrome.
Rejection Criteria: Specimen frozen and thawed more than once; heparinized plasma; non-siliconized glass tubes used for collection or storage.
