Centrifuge in a chilled centrifuge and separate plasma from cells immediately. Freeze immediately in a plastic vial. Allow no more than one freeze/thaw cycle. If other testing is ordered, send a separate specimen for this test.

0.5 mL plasma.

100 µL plasma.

Comments:
Plasma ACTH determinations are useful in the differential diagnosis of Cushing’s disease, Addison’s disease, autonomous ACTH-producing pituitary tumors, hypopituitarism with ACTH deficiency and ectopic ACTH syndrome.
Rejection Criteria:
Specimen frozen and thawed more than once; heparinized plasma; non-siliconized glass tubes used for collection or storage.
