25400:PLATELET FUNCTION ANALYSIS (PFA), IN-VITRO BLEEDING TIME
Alias Names: | PFA / In-Vitro Bleeding Time / Platelet Function
Methodology: | Whole Blood Platelet Aggregation
Edit Date: | 12/7/2009 | ||||||||
Performed: | Daily | ||||||||
Released: | Same day as tested
CPT Code: | 85576 (if normal); 85576 x2 (if abnormal)
Specimen Collection Details
Collection: | One 4.5 mL light blue top tube (sodium citrate). Draw the blue tube before any other tubes to avoid cross-contamination of the specimen with clot activators. Glass tubes are preferred over plastic to minimize platelet clumping, especially if testing will not be performed immediately. Fill tube to maximum draw, at least 90% full. Mix by gentle inversion (3-4 times). Do not over mix to avoid platelet activation and clumping. If possible, aspirin and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDS) should be avoided 10 days prior to collection of the PFA specimen. Ibuprofen should be avoided for 48 hours prior to collection. A list of drugs affecting platelet function and which should be avoided prior to this testing is listed under Publications at Platelet Active Drug List. |
||||||||
Handling: | Keep tube ambient. Do not refrigerate or centrifuge. Deliver entire specimen to the laboratory within 3 hours. Specimen must be tested within 4 hours of collection.
Stability: | 4 hours ambient. Unstable refrigerated or frozen.
Standard Volume: | 4.5 mL whole blood.
Minimum Volume: | 2.7 mL whole blood.
Transport: | Original tube ambient and uncentrifuged.
Rejection Criteria: | Clotted specimen; refrigerated or centrifuged specimen; moderate to marked hemolysis; specimen age greater than 4 hours. |
