Specimen Collection Details
Collection:
3-6 mL urine in a plastic urine container. Collect during acidosis or after overnight fast. If patient has intermittent symptoms, specimen should be obtained when patient is symptomatic.
Handling:
Freeze within 4 hours of collection. Note clinical indication and all medications, antibiotics, vitamins, specific diet or formula, etc. Ongoing collections can be frozen separately until desired volume is obtained. Submit together, frozen. Do not allow to thaw.
Standard Volume:
15 mL urine.
Minimum Volume:
3 mL urine.
Transport:
Frozen on dry ice.
Comments:
Performed on acutely ill neonates, or any patient with suspected or proven metabolic acidosis. Other Indications include severe infections, intermittent come, Reye’s syndrome, vomiting, failure to thrive, hypotonia, lethargy, hypoglycemia, athetosis, ataxia, myopathy or peculiar smell; also convulsions or cerebral palsy if combined with any of the above. May also be indicated if a positive test for ketones or ketoacids is obtained during amino acid/metabolic screen. In samples where the urine requires additional analysis, a supplementary charge for extended mass spectrometry will be billed.
