Specimen Collection Details
Collection: One 7.5 mL serum separator tube (SST). Also acceptable: One 5 mL red top tube. Specimen should be collected before such prostatic manipulations as DRE, prostatic massage, TRUS, and prostatic biopsy.
Handling: Allow to clot, centrifuge, and separate serum from cells within 3 hours. Refrigerate, or freeze at -20 oC if transport is delayed beyond 48 hours. Keep frozen.
Stability: 48 hours refrigerated or 5 months frozen at -20o C.
Standard Volume: 2 mL serum.
Minimum Volume: 1 mL serum.
Transport: Refrigerated, or frozen on dry ice.
Comments: If PSA is >3.0 a Free PSA will be added. An additional charge will be added.
This is a Hybritech 3rd Generation (Ultrasensitive) equimolar Total PSA with a clinical sensitivity of 0.008 ng/mL.
Rejection Criteria: Plasma; specimen frozen and thawed more than once.
