Specimen Collection Details
Collection: Sputum collected just after awakening in sputum collection container; respiratory specimen other than sputum, body fluid, cerebral spinal fluid(CSF), or tissue in a sterile plastic container; swab specimen in Routine Culture transport swab; purulent material using a sterile syringe with air expelled, or other sterile container.
Handling: If syringe is submitted the needle MUST be removed and the syringe capped.
Stability: Transport swab or respiratory stable 18 hours ambient. All other specimens stable 18 hours refrigerated. All specimens unstable frozen.
Standard Volume: 5 mL.
Minimum Volume: 1 mL.
Transport: Transport swab and respiratory specimen ambient. All other specimens refrigerated.
Comments: Isolates of Actinomadura, Dermatophilus, Gordonia, Nocardia, Rhodococcus, Streptomyces, and Tsukamurella will be isolated and identified. An additional charge will be added for each identification. Leaking containers will be rejected if the source is respiratory or if there is any indication of mycobacterial infection such as clinical history or orders for acid-fast bacillus (AFB) culture and/or smear.
Rejection Criteria: Urine or genital source; delayed transport; refrigerated specimen for the isolation of Nocardia; leaking containers; frozen specimen.
