Specimen Collection Details
Collection: Fresh stool transferred into a SAF vial, Formalin vial, or ECOFIX. Also acceptable: Sputum in a sterile container. Refrigerate.
Handling: Place refrigerated stool in the preservatives within 2 hours.
Stability: After stool specimen is preserved, or sputum: 14 days ambient or 14 days refrigerated.
Standard Volume: 2 mL stool.
Minimum Volume: 1 mL stool.
Transport: Refrigerated.
Comments: The assay, which aids in the diagnosis of parasitic infections, consists of two different stains: Modified trichrome which identifies Microsporidia and Modified Acid Fast which identifies Cryptosporidium, Isospora, and Cyclospora.
Rejection Criteria: Leaking container; culturettes or swabs; PVA vial; unpreserved stool.
