29200:FLOW CYTOMETRY, LYMPHOCYTES, B CELL SUBSETS (AUTOIMMUNE DISORDERS)
Alias Names: Lymphocyte B-Cell Subsets
Methodology: Flow Cytometry
Edit Date: 10/27/2008
Performed: Daily
Released: Within 48 hours
CPT Code: 88184 / 88185 x4
Specimen Collection Details
Collection: One 4 mL lavender top tube (EDTA).
Handling: Leave as whole blood. Refrigerate.
Stability: 48 hours refrigerated.
Standard Volume: 4 mL EDTA whole blood.
Minimum Volume: 1 mL EDTA whole blood.
Transport: Refrigerated.
Comments: For monitoring abnormalities in B lymphocyte subsets in patients with SLE and Sjogren’s syndrome. Includes enumeration of total B, naive B, activated naive B, memory B, early plasma cells and pathologist interpretation of these results. Patterns of quantitative alterations in these cell populations have been documented in systemic lupus erythematosis (SLE) and Sjogren’s syndrome (SS). Measuring these levels may be useful to monitor status of diagnosed disease, and determine efficacy of treatment. B cell subset abnormalities are not specific for autoimmune disease, and should not be used for initial diagnosis.
Rejection Criteria: Poor specimen viability; clotting; hemolysis; specimen older than 48 hours.
