Specimen Collection Details
Collection: One 4 mL lavender top tube (EDTA). Also acceptable: Any anticoagulated specimen, such as one 4 mL green top tube (heparin), or one 4.5 light blue top tube (sodium citrate).
Handling: Keep as whole blood and send to the laboratory within 72 hours.
Stability: Unstable frozen.
Standard Volume: 3 mL whole blood.
Minimum Volume: 0.5 mL whole blood.
Transport: Ambient or refrigerated.
Comments: Microfilaria species, i.e., Dirofilaria and Dipetalonema, are distinguished by size, motility, and morphologic features.
Rejection Criteria: Frozen specimen.
