Specimen Collection Details
Collection: One 7.5 mL serum separator tube (SST) or one 5 mL red top tube.
Handling: Allow blood to clot at ambient temperature for 60 minutes. Centrifuge and separate serum from cells immediately. CRITICAL: Freeze at -20° C immediately. Allow no more than one freeze/thaw cycle. If other testing is ordered, send separate specimen for this test.
Standard Volume: 0.5 mL serum.
Minimum Volume: 200 µL serum.
Transport: Frozen on dry ice.
Rejection Criteria: Hemolysis; specimens which have been frozen and thawed more than once.

CH-50 Total Complement Result Interpretation:

>100 CH50 Units

0-100 CH50 Units >100 CH50 Units
Absent or Low Normal

The results obtained by this assay will provide a quantitative value for the functional activity of total complement. This test can determine whole complement levels, but does not identify the component or components that are abnormal.
