Edit Date: 8/6/2009
Performed: Daily
Released: 1-5 days after setup at PeaceHealth Laboratories’ reference lab.
CPT Code: 82088-90 / 84244-90
Specimen Collection Details
Collection: Order only if request is for “Activity Ratio.”
Two tubes total: One 7.5 mL serum separator tube (SST), and one 4 mL lavender top tube (EDTA).
Handling: Centrifuge and separate serum and plasma from cells immediately. Freeze. Critical frozen. If multiple tests are ordered, send separate specimens for this test.
Stability: After separation from cells: 4 hours ambient or 30 days frozen. Unstable refrigerated.
Standard Volume: 1 mL serum and 1 mL plasma
Minimum Volume: 0.6 mL serum and 0.6 mL plasma.
Transport: Frozen on dry ice.
Rejection Criteria: Refrigerated plasma.

Reference Range:
Components Reference Interval
Aldosterone, Serum Age Posture Unspecified Supine Upright
0-6 days 5.0-102.0 ng/dL
1-3 weeks 6.0-179.0 ng/dL
1-11 months 7.0-99.0 ng/dL
1-2 years 7.0-93.0 ng/dL
3-10 years 4.0-44.0 ng/dL
11-14 years 4.0-31.0 ng/dL
11-14 years 4.0-31.0 ng/dL
15 years and older 31.0 ng/dL or less 16.0 ng/dL or less 4.0-31.0 ng/dL
Renin Activity Adult, normal sodium diet:
Supine: 0.2-1.6 ng/mL/hr
Upright: 0.5-4.0 ng/mL/hr
Newborn (1-7 days): 2.0-35.0 ng/mL/hr
Cord blood: 4.0-32.0 ng/mL/hr
Children, normal sodium diet, supine:
1-12 months: 2.4-37.0 ng/mL/hr
13 months-3 years: 1.7-11.2 ng/mL/hr
4-5 years: 1.0-6.5 ng/mL/hr
6-10 years: 0.5-5.9 ng/mL/hr
11-15 years: 0.5-3.3 ng/mL/hr
AldosterCalculation one/Renin Activity < 25
An Aldosterone/Renin Activity Ratio >25 is suggestive of hyperaldosteronism.
