Specimen Collection Details
Collection: One 10 mL green top tube (sodium heparin). Also acceptable: Two 4 mL lavender top tubes (EDTA). Protect from light during collection, storage and shipping.
Handling: Centrifuge and separate plasma from cells and pour into a plastic vial. Freeze immediately. CRITICAL FROZEN. Protect from light. If multiple tests are ordered, send separate specimen for this test.
Stability: 7 days refrigerated or 6 months frozen. Unstable ambient.
Standard Volume: 3 mL plasma
Minimum Volume: 200 µL plasma
Transport: Frozen. Protect from light.
Comments: Whole blood is the preferred specimen for thiamine assessment. Approximately 80% of thiamine present in whole blood is found in red blood cells. Refer to Vitamin B1 (Thiamine), Whole Blood (89220). This assay does not distinguish thiamine from its phosphate esters.
Rejection Criteria: Specimen not frozen within 4 hours of collection; thawed or hemolyzed specimen; specimen not protected from light; specimen in glass tube.
