Specimen Collection Details
Collection: Two prepared slides or smears, fixed with acetone, and placed in a slide holder. Also acceptable: Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) or semen in a sterile, leak-proof container. Specimen such as vesicular lesion or genital lesion can be submitted in M4 medium. Source of specimen is required.
Stability: 48 hours ambient, 72 hours refrigerated, or 7 days frozen.
Comments: Diagnosis of herpes virus infection and differentiation of HSV 1 from HSV 2.
Rejection Criteria: Wooden or dry swabs; calcium alginate; urine.
