80274:AEROBIC ORGANISM IDENTIFICATION WITH SUSCEPTIBILITY
Alias Names: Identification, Aerobic Bacteria with Reflex to Susceptibility / Organism Identification, Aerobic with Reflex to Susceptibility
Methodology: Standard reference procedures for aerobic bacterial identification and susceptibility tests.
Edit Date: 5/17/2010
Performed: Daily
Released: Varies
CPT Code: 87077-90
Specimen Collection Details
Collection: Actively growing organism, in pure culture, on agar slant or on a swab in bacterial transport media. NOTE: Source of specimen is required.
Handling: Submit specimen according to Biological Substance, category B, shipping guidelines.

Indicate source of organism and any other pertinent information, including a warning if organism is suspected to be a dangerous pathogen (Salmonella, Shigella, Neisseria Meningitidis, etc).

Stability: 7 days ambient. Unstable refrigerated or frozen.
Transport: Ambient.
Comments: The selection and extent of tests used for identification vary accordingly to the specimen source, and type of organism suspected. The susceptibility method and antibiotic panel will be selected based on organism identification. Susceptibility testing will not be performed if inappropriate for source and/or organism.

Rejection Criteria: Nonviable organism; mixed cultures; leaking container.

Reference Range:
Complete identification, with susceptibility of clinically significant isolates.

If a significant organism is identified, the appropriate susceptibility panel will then be added.
