Specimen Collection Details
Collection: One 7.5 serum separator tube (SST). Also acceptable: One 4 mL lavender top tube (EDTA), or one 4 mL green topt tube (heparin). Patient must not consume any alcohol for 24 hours before the specimen is drawn.
Handling: Allow to clot, centrifuge and separate serum or plasma from cells and pour into a plastic vial. Freeze. Patient’s age is required for testing. Include information regarding tentative diagnosis, treatment, and family history.
Stability: Unstable ambient or refrigerated.
Standard Volume: 1 mL serum or plasma.
Minimum Volume: 150 µL serumor plasma.
Transport: Frozen on dry ice.
Comments: This test evaluates the nutritional intake and intestinal absorption of essential fatty acids.
Rejection Criteria: Thawed specimen.
