Specimen Collection Details
Collection: One 7 mL serum separator tube (SST). Also acceptable: One 5 mL red top tube.
Handling: Separate serum from cells immediately. Refrigerate. Freeze at -20° C or lower if specimen will not be tested within 5 days of collection. If other tests are ordered send separate specimen for this test.
Stability: 5 days refrigerated.
Standard Volume: 0.3 mL serum. This volume necessary for retesting or other reflex tests.
Minimum Volume: 0.3 mL serum.
Transport: Refrigerated, or frozen on dry ice.
Comments: Patient need not be fasting and no special preparation is necessary. Infants born to mothers whose hepatitis statis is unknown should be given HBIG if the mother is Hep B positive as soon as possible, but no later than one week after bith (CDC guidelines). Specimens received Monday through Friday will be resulted the following day. Specimens received after 0700 Saturday will be run and reported on Tuesday.
