Specimen Collection Details
Collection:
One 7.5 mL serum separator tube (SST).
Handling:
Centrifuge and separate serum from cells and pour into a plastic vial immediately. Mark specimen plainly as ‘acute’ or ‘convalescent.’ Refrigerate.
Stability:
48 hours ambient, 14 days refrigerated, or 1 year frozen. Avoid repeated freeze/thaw cycles.
Standard Volume:
1 mL serum.
Minimum Volume:
200 µL serum.
Transport:
Refrigerated.
Comments:
Parallel testing is preferred and the convalescent specimen must be received within 30 days from receipt of the acute specimen. Acute and convalescent specimens must be labeled as such.
Rejection Criteria:
Contaminated or heat-inactivated specimen; hemolytic, icteric, or turbid specimen.
