Specimen Collection Details
Collection: NOTE: Screen can be performed only on individuals between 10 weeks, 5 days and 13 weeks, 6 days gestation. Requires a second specimen submitted between 15 weeks, 0 days and 21 weeks, 6 days gestation, Serum Integrated Screen, 2nd Trimester (41962). Order on a PeaceHealth Laboratories Obstetric requisition or electronically, and include the following information, required for interpretation: patient’s date of birth, dating method (US, LMP), number of fetuses, patient’s race, if patient requires insulin, if a previous child has neural tube defects or Down syndrome and, for in vitro fertilization pregnancies, the age of the egg donor. Also indicate if patient is a smoker (this alters one biomarker and requires a correction). Collect one 7.5 mL serum separator tube (SST). Also acceptable: One 5 mL red top tube. Refrigerate.
Handling: Allow to clot, centrifuge and separate serum from cells immediately.
Stability: 4 days refrigerated at 2-8° C, or frozen at -20° C. Allow no more than one freeze/thaw cycle.
Standard Volume: 2 mL serum
Minimum Volume: Min: 1 mL serum
Transport: Refrigerated, or frozen on dry ice.
Comments: Incomplete information will delay patient results. Risk assessment is determined after receipt of 2nd trimester specimen integrating the PAPP-A values from the 1st trimester specimen. NO RISK IS REPORTED FOR 1ST TRIMESTER.
Rejection Criteria: Gross hemolysis or gross lipemia; specimen frozen/thawed more than once.
