99835:FUNGITELL
Alias Names: Viracor
Methodology: Fungitell B-D Glucan Assay
Edit Date: 7/29/2010
Performed: Monday-Saturday
Released: 24-48 hours after setup at PeaceHealth Laboratories’ reference lab
CPT Code: 87449-90
Specimen Collection Details
Collection: One 7.5 mL serum separator tube (SST).
Handling: Allow to clot and centrifuge within 2 hours. Do not pour off; keep in original SST tube.
Stability: 5 days refrigerated or indefinitely frozen. Unstable ambient.
Standard Volume: 1 mL serum
Minimum Volume: 0.5 mL serum
Transport: Refrigerated.
Comments: The Fungitell B-D Glucan assay is indicated for the presumptive diagnosis of invasive fungal disease through detection of elevated levels of (1,3)-B-D-glucan, typically 10 to 40 pg/mL, presumably from commensal yeasts present in the alimentary canal and gastrointestinal tract. However, (1,3)-B-D-glucan is sloughed from the cell walls during the life cycle of most pathogenic fungi. Thus, monitoring serum for evidence of elevated and rising levels of (1,3)-B-D-glucan provides a convenient surrogate marker for invasive fungal disease.
Rejection Criteria: Lipemic, icteric, or hemolyzed specimen.
