Specimen Collection Details
Collection: Two 4 mL lavender top tubes. Also acceptable but not preferred: One 7.5 mL serum separator tube (SST).
Handling: Within 6 hours of collection, centrifuge and separate plasma or serum into a plastic vial. Freeze. Do not allow to thaw.
Stability: 48 hours refrigerated or 6 weeks frozen. Unstable ambient.
Standard Volume: 3 mL plasma or serum
Minimum Volume: 1.6 mL plasma or serum
Transport: Frozen on dry ice.
Comments: HCV RNA quantitative assays are used to confirm HCV Antibody and to document persistent infection. The Veterans Affairs Guidelines recommend HCV RNA assays to patients receiving treatment. HEPTIMAX® C provides the broadest linear range available for HCV.
Rejection Criteria: Thawed or ambient specimen; use of heparin tube.
