A total of four slides from the right and left lateral and the anterior and posterior vaginal walls. Before collecting specimen, sponge the cervix and vagina to remove mucus that may contain columnar cells.
Handling:
Send slides sprayed with pap fixative, dried, and submitted in a plastic or cardboard mailer. Label smears with corresponding sites. Avoid exposure to heat. Smears must be free of endocervical contamination.

Screening for diethystilbesterol (DES) exposed patients.
Rejection Criteria:
Broken slides; smears not taken from vaginal walls; unlabeled or mislabeled specimen.
