Collection: | One 5 mL red top tube. Draw peak sample 2 hours post dose. Also acceptable: One 4 mL green top tube (heparin), 4 mL lavender top tube (EDTA), or one 4 mL grey top tube (sodium fluoride/potassium oxalate). | ||||||||
Handling: | Allow to clot, centrifuge and separate serum or plasma into a plastic vial. NOTE: Indicate which sulfa drug is being administered. Refrigerate. | ||||||||

Comments: | This test is designed to measure sulfamethoxazole and sulfisoxazole. Peak sulfonamide (total) blood levels of 5-15 mg/dL may be effective for most infections, with concentrations of 12-15 mg/dL being optimal for serious infections. Sulfonamide levels should not exceed 20 mg/dL.
