Specimen Collection Details
Collection: Requires collection by appointment on Mondays-Fridays and must be drawn by 8:30 am at PeaceHealth Laboratories’ Downtown Patient Service Center, 1162 Willamette, 541.687.6084.
Call PeaceHealth Laboratories for a STAT courier pickup by 9:00 am.

Specimen will be drawn using the kit provided by Oregon State Public Health Laboratory which includes Nil control tube (grey top tube), TB Antigen (red top tube), and mitogen control (purple top tube). Draw 1 mL (0.8-1.2 mL) blood into each specimen tube (note black fill-line near bottom of tube). NOTE: tube will fill slowly.

Handling: Mix each tube by shaking vigorously for 5 seconds. Blood must come into contact with entire inner surface of tube. Do not centrifuge.Keep ambient. DO NOT refrigerate.

Label each specimen with patient name and collection date and time. Place labelled tubes into the specimen bag containing an absorbent pad and send to PeaceHealth Laboratories via STAT courier.

Notify PeaceHealth Laboratories’ Reference Department that specimen is drawn and being transported to the laboratory. Specimen must be sent via the 10:30 am Portland courier to reach OSPHL within 16 hours of collection.

Stability: 16 hours ambient. Unstable refrigerated or frozen.
Standard Volume: 1 mL whole blood in each tube
Transport: Ambient via STAT courier.
Comments: The QuantiFERON TB gold test is used as an aid in diagnosing Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection, including latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) and tuberculosis (TB) disease. However, this test should not be the sole diagnostic test in a patient with suspected active TB. This test can be falsely negative in ≥ 30% of active disease cases. Caution should also be exercised in people with immune compromising conditions including but not limited to HIV infection, Diabetes Mellitus, and renal failure.
Rejection Criteria: Specimen received more than 16 hours after collection; refrigerated or frozen specimen.
