52210:Rh IMMUNE GLOGULIN (RhIG), POSTPARTUM
Alias Names: RHIG
Methodology: Hemagglutination (HA)
Edit Date: 9/10/2010
Components: Fetal Bleed Screen / Rh Group
Performed: Daily
Released: Next day. Call for PeaceHealth Laboratories’ courier schedule for delivery of RhIG, if needed.
Specimen Collection Details
Collection: Two 6 mL pink top tubes (EDTA for Blood Bank) from mother. Also acceptable: Three 4 mL lavender top tubes (EDTA). Draw and send specimen from mother, preferably within one hour of delivery. When indicated, it is suggested that Rh Immune Globulin (RhIG) be given to the patient within 72 hours of delivery. Allow time for transport and testing to meet this time frame.
Handling: Do not centrifuge or separate plasma. Accurate labeling with patient’s first and last name and date of birth is required on tube. Tube should be labeled at the time blood is drawn. Do not cover original label. If tests other than for Blood Bank are ordered, send separate specimen for those tests.
Stability: Optimal sensitivity to fetal-maternal hemorrhage occurs from specimens collected within 1-2 hours after delivery, and are refrigerated and tested as soon as possible.
Standard Volume: 12 mL whole blood
Minimum Volume: Contact PeaceHealth Laboratories Transfusion Service for acceptable minimum volume.
Transport: Ambient or refrigerated.
Comments: This panel is for postpartum administration of RhIG and includes Rh typing and Fetal Screen, and by itself does not indicate if mother needs to receive RhIG. To determine whether RhIG is indicated, Cord Blood Workup (50930) on the newborn should be ordered and sent with this specimen. Antibody Screen (50500) will be ordered separately, if needed, by PeaceHealth Laboratories Transfusion Service. Indicate if RhIG product needs to be delivered.
Rejection Criteria: Gross hemolysis; specimen collected in SST; incorrect, incomplete, or inconsistent labeling on tube or requisition.
