Specimen Collection Details
Collection: One 2 mL grey top tube (sodium fluoride/potassium oxalate). Cottage Grove only: One 4 mL green top tube (heparin).
The patient should avoid any exercise of the arm or hand before or during collection. Optimally, the draw should be done without the use of a tourniquet. Tube should be at least half full.
Handling: Centrifuge and separate plasma from cells into a plastic tube within 4 hours; keep tightly capped and refrigerated at 2-8° C. Minimize exposure to air.
Cottage Grove only: Do not centrifuge. Send as whole blood.
Stability: 7 days refrigerated if plasma is removed from cells within 4 hours.
Cottage Grove only: Specimen should be assayed immediately.
Standard Volume: 1 mL plasma. Cottage Grove only: 1 mL whole blood.
Minimum Volume: 0.5 mL plasma Cottage Grove only: 0.5 mL whole blood.
Transport: Refrigerated. Cottage Grove only: Ambient
Rejection Criteria: Serum; plasma other than specified. Cottage Grove only: Serum: whole blood other than heparin.
