Specimen Collection Details
Collection: Two 6 mL pink top tubes (EDTA for Blood Bank). Also acceptable: Two 4 mL lavender top tubes (EDTA).
Handling: Do not centrifuge or separate plasma. Accurate labelling on tube of patient’s first and last name and date of birth is required. Tube should be labelled at the time blood is drawn. Do not cover original label.
If tests other than for Blood Bank are ordered, send separate specimen for those tests.
Standard Volume: 12 mL whole blood
Minimum Volume: 10 mL whole blood
Transport: Ambient or refrigerated.
Comments: Antibody identification is always done concurrently. Current titer specimen tested in parallel with previous specimen.
Rejection Criteria: Gross hemolysis; incorrect labelling of patient’s name or date of birth on tube label or test requisition.
