Specimen Collection Details
Collection: ADULT: One 6 mL pink top tube (EDTA for Blood Bank). Also acceptable: Two 4 mL lavender top tube (EDTA).
PEDIATRIC: Capillary or venous blood in one lavender top Microtainer tube (EDTA), or cord blood in a container with no anticoagulant. This specimen can be shared with Rh and ABO Neonatal.
Handling: Do not centrifuge or separate plasma. Accurate labelling with patient’s first and last name and date of birth is required on tube. Tube should be labelled at the time blood is drawn. Do not cover original label.
If tests other than for Blood bank are ordered, send separate specimen for those tests.
Standard Volume: 6 mL whole blood
Minimum Volume: 0.5 mL whole blood
Transport: Ambient or refrigerated.
Rejection Criteria: Gross hemolysis; specimen collected in SST; incorrect, incomplete, or inconsistent labeling on tube or requisition.
