Specimen Collection Details
Collection: Two 6 mL pink top tubes (EDTA for Blood Bank). Also acceptable: Two 4 mL lavender top tubes (EDTA).
Handling: Do not centrifuge or separate plasma. Accurate labelling of patient’s first and last name and date of birth on tubes and requisition is required. Tube should be labelled at the time blood is drawn. Do not cover original label.
If test other than for Blood Bank are ordered, send separate specimen for those tests.
Standard Volume: 12 mL whole blood
Minimum Volume: 10 mL whole blood
Transport: Ambient or refrigerated.
Comments: Antibody identification always done concurrently. Current titer specimen tested in parallel with previous specimen.
Rejection Criteria: Gross hemolysis; incorrect labelling of patient name or date of birth on tube or requisition.
