Specimen Collection Details
Collection: Nasopharyngeal swabs or nasal swabs using the BD Universal Viral Transport Media (UVT) collection kit (PeaceHealth Laboratories order #11528) with flocked swabs. Nasal aspirates and washes in a sterile container or ≤3 mL of nasal aspirate/wash in UVT are also acceptable. Nasopharyngeal swabs in M4 and M4RT are also acceptable, however, M4 and M4RT media is no longer provided by PeaceHealth Laboratories.
Handling: Refrigerate and transport to laboratory at 2-8° C. Source of specimen is required.
Stability: From collection to initiation of testing: 72 hours refrigerated; freeze for longer storage ≤ -70° C
(≤ -70° C or lower freezer required, do not freeze in a standard freezer).
Standard Volume: Aspirates or washes: ≤ 3 mL
Transport: Refrigerated, or frozen on dry ice. Source of specimen is required. Place each specimen in a separate, individually sealed bag.
Rejection Criteria: Dry swabs, collection and transport procedures not followed as described above; slides; insufficient columnar epithelial cells.
