Specimen Collection Details
Collection: One 5 mL red top tube. Also acceptable: One 4 mL lavender top tube (EDTA). NOTE: Patient must fast 12 hours prior to collection. Patient must NOT be receiving heparin.
Handling: Allow to clot, centrifuge and immediately separate serum or plasma from cells into a plastic vial. Label tube as ‘serum’ or ‘plasma.’ Refrigerate.
Stability: 8 hours ambient, 14 days refrigerated, or 6 months frozen.
Standard Volume: 1 mL serum or plasma
Minimum Volume: 0.3 mL serum or plasma
Transport: Refrigerated.
Comments: LDL Type A: Indicative of Type A. Type A is characterized by mainly large buoyant LDL.

LDL Not Type A: Not indicative of Type A. Not Type A is characterized by mainly small dense LDL. Small dense LDL is associated with an increased risk of coronary artery disease.

Rejection Criteria: Specimen from patient receiving heparin.
