Random stool in a clean, dry plastic container. NOTE: For the 3 days prior to specimen collection, the patient should (1) be on a fat-controlled diet of 100-150 grams of fat per day, (2) use no laxatives, particularly mineral or castor oil, and (3) consume no fat substitutes or fat-blocking nutritional substitutes.
Stability:
2 hours ambient, 48 hours refrigerated, or 14 days frozen at -20° C or below.
Standard Volume:
5 gm solid stool or 5 mL liquid stool.
Minimum Volume:
2 gm solid stool or 2 mL liquid stool.
Transport:
Ambient, refrigerated, or frozen on dry ice.
Rejection Criteria:
Delayed transport; specimen mixed with water or urine; bismuth or barium (generally, these substances will clear in 48 hours); dried specimen; specimen in transport media or preservative.
