Specimen Collection Details
Collection: 48- or 72-hour stool collection in pre-weighed container is preferred specimen. Also acceptable: 24-hour or random collection. Patient should consume 100-150 grams of fat per day. No laxatives, including mineral oil and castor oil, for 72 hours prior to collection. Entire collection MUST be submitted. Keep specimen refrigerated (cold) during collection.
Handling: Note duration of collection.
Standard Volume: Entire collection.
Minimum Volume: Entire stool collection must weigh 5 grams or more.
Transport: Frozen on dry ice.
Comments: Barium or synthetic fat substitutes interfere with this test procedure. This test is useful for evaluating person with intestinal malabsorption, or investigation of suspected laxative abuse.
Rejection Criteria: Specimen containing foreign material; less than entire collection submitted (cannot be shared with other tests).

2-7 g/24 hours and/or <20% of total solids.
